Forward Bends & Twists

Please join Mary Lou Weprin for an afternoon practice of forward bends and twists, as well as shoulderstand variations. We will warm-up and prepare with hip-openers and leg stretches, traction and partner work, and will then explore a sequence of forward bends and seated twists, with appropriate propping and alternatives. Our afternoon practice will end with shoulderstand and variations, and a long Savasana.

Teaching Restorative Yoga

Restorative practices promote breathing, body awareness, and the relaxation response. In this seminar, we will discuss ways in which to sequence a restorative practice to support the student's ability to release muscle tension and stress from the body. We will work with partners to learn more about individualizing poses for each student's particular needs. Yoga for Healthy Feet | April

The health and well being of the anatomical body depends on a strong and steady foundation. Inspired by the teachings of Donald Moyer, this workshop will help students develop awareness, strength and suppleness of the feet in a wide variety of yoga postures, and will include therapeutic applications for numerous foot issues including weak/fallen arches and bunions. Donald Moyer's new book, Yoga for Healthy Feet: Practice from the Ground Up, will be available for purchase and further study.

Learn the Ropes | April

Come learn how to practice on our new rope wall system. Mary Lou Weprin will guide us in learning rope techniques for standing poses, inversions, backbends and forward bends to enhance alignment, take weight off the joints, provide weightless extension and traction and feel the exhilaration of freedom from gravity. Working with the ropes gives therapeutic symmetry and alignment difficult to achieve on our own, and can help us better understand how to work in the poses to create space. Use of ropes walls has always been part of the Iyengar system, at the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India, and in many Iyengar studios around the world. Thanks to generous donations from our Yoga Room Community and graduating classes, we can now benefit from this new dimension of practice. All levels welcome.

Relaxation & Breathing

During this afternoon practice we will concentrate on soothing the nervous system through the use of conscious breathing practices and yoga asanas. We will initiate and support the relaxation response with a carefully crafted sequence. Beginning with active clearing warm-ups and movements that build deep inner heat, we will take time to bring opening to joints and ease to alignment. There will be time for restorative chest and hip openers, sitting and deep relaxation.

In this Building Strength for Facing Trying Times Series, we will investigate how we can use our asana practice to cultivate the strength, stability, and fortitude that we need when facing difficult periods in our lives or in the world around us. How do the different categories of asanas we practice contribute to cultivating the different qualities that assist us when times are hard: the ability to bear up physically under pressure, mental fortitude, emotional resilience, a steadiness of spirit?

These two-hour restorative practices begin in Savasana with breathing and body awareness; then continue with gentle stretches on the mat. The restorative poses that follow will be held longer to support the relaxation response. No yoga experience is necessary. Dropins are welcome.

Spring Intermediate Practice

Treat your inner-body to a well-rounded practice with one of Portland's highly regarded teachers. We'll explore new content in familiar arenas, using accessible inner-body language. Students should be familiar with headstand and shoulderstand, with a minimum of one year attending a Level 2-4 class regularly. Alternatives to inversions and other poses will be provided as needed to ensure everyone receives similar benefit while working in a way that honors their circumstances.
