Donald Moyer began practicing Iyengar yoga in 1971 and teaching in 1974. He founded The Yoga Room in 1978 and served as director for over thirty years. Donald studied extensively with B.K.S. Iyengar in India from 1976–1988 and continues to be deeply inspired by his method. He wrote the Asana column for Yoga Journal in 1987, 1989, and 1992. Gay White is Director of The Yoga Room and Co-Director of The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program. She has studied asana and pranayama from Donald Moyer since 1991 and at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India. Gay’s classes and workshops are dedicated to alignment and awareness in a safe and creative mixed-level learning community. Gay also leads yoga retreats and intensives locally and internationally. She has been making dances since 1975, and is director of the Yoga Garden Dancers.

Mary Lou Weprin has been teaching at The Yoga Room since 1980. As Co-Director with Gay White of The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program, she continues the work she started with Donald Moyer in 1988 of training many of the Bay Area’s teachers. She also leads Intensives for out-of-town teachers to deepen their ability to observe and assist their students. She offers Practice Intensives and other workshops throughout the year, and leads workshops in the U.S. and Canada. From 2004-2007, Mary Lou was Co-Director (with Patricia Dewar) of the Yoga Central Teacher Training Program in Saskatoon, Sask., Canada.
Mary Lou’s training has been primarily with B.K.S. Iyengar and Geeta Iyengar in India; Donald Moyer, Ramanand Patel, Judith Lasater, and the late Mary Dunn. She also studied with Dona Holleman in the US and Italy. She graduated from the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco in the late 70s, and was later part of their teacher training faculty, teaching asana theory and basic teaching skills. Mary Lou is currently certified as Intermediate Junior Level 3 with the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the U.S. (IYNAUS). She is registered with Yoga Alliance at the Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500 level (E-RYT-500). Mary Lou is interested in aligning the body and sequencing the practice in such a way as to energize and nurture the inner body. She makes challenging poses more accessible using preparations, special sequencing, and lots of humor. Her classes are educational, challenging and fun.

Ada Lusardi‘s classes and workshops marry the heart and science of yoga by offering nuanced and precise teaching with warmth and humor. A self-professed “anatomy geek,” she leads classes and retreats throughout California’s Bay area and around the country. She is a graduate, and faculty member, of The Berkeley Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program, a long time student of Donald Moyer and Mary Lou Weprin, and a perennial student of yoga and life.

Benjamin Flowers graduated from The Yoga Room’s 500 hour teacher training program in 2013. His primary teacher is Mary Lou Weprin, a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and Co-Director of the Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies program. He is also certified as an Elise Browning Miller Yoga for Scoliosis Teacher Trainer. Benjamin seeks to find the intricacies within every asana and believes even the most elementary of postures has the ability to transform your mind. Bonnie Maeda, RN, teaches Restorative Yoga and co-teaches Yoga For Health at The Yoga Room as well as at several Bay Area hospitals and Women’s Centers. She is certified by the Arthritis Foundation and also as an “Advanced Relax and Renew” teacher from Judith Hanson Lasater’s program. Her approach is gentle yoga for health and healing as well as restorative yoga to promote relaxation and manage stress. She believes in the benefits of yoga for every age, body type, and ability.

Bridget Frederick began studying at The Yoga Room in 2002 and is a graduate of the Advanced Studies Program. She has worked with students of all ages, body types and abilities. Clare Finn, has been a student of Yoga and Meditation for over thirty years. She first studied Iyengar Yoga from Donald Moyer at the Yoga Room in 1980, then attended the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco for three years, and was a founding partner of both the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland and 4th Street Yoga in Berkeley. She continues to work on balance and alignment, teaching from an intuitive place of seeing how the asanas and meditation can add ease and awareness to our lives.

Debbie Gilman, M.A., ERYT 500, has been teaching yoga since 1998. She graduated from and now teaches for the Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program and is a student of Donald Moyer. She is also on the faculty of the teacher training program at Downtown Yoga in Pleasanton. Debbie has rich experience in yoga therapeutics having taught one-on-one yoga-based rehabilitation at Innate Chiropractic & Wellness Studio in Albany and healing yoga at the Women’s Cancer Resource Center in Oakland for many years. Debbie has a BA from Stanford and an MA from Harvard.
Deborah Saliby, originally from New England, graduated from University of Massachusetts, Lowell with a BA in Psychology and Art. Always having a deep interest in aspects of the mind and well-being, and after receiving her BA, Deborah moved to California in 1979. Fortunate to discover Yoga in college at the YWCA she never turned back. Her yoga teacher at the time in Massachusetts Sue Luby, directed her to the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. Three years later she completed the yoga teacher training and moved to Berkeley. Today her yoga classes are informed with 41 years of practice, study and teaching. Some of her most cherished yoga teachers through the years are; Donald Moyer, Judith Lasater, Mary Dunn, Jaki Nett, Manouso Manos and dear friend, Janet MacLeod. She continues to be inspired by her students and all the therapeutic method Iyengar yoga has to offer.
In the last 8 years, Deborah has revisited earlier academic interests, attended graduate school and earned a teaching credential as an Education Specialists. She presently teaches full-time severely handicapped children, k-3 grade.
“I continue to teach yoga because it brings me great joy to help others maintain balance in their life. My classes are structured through specialized sequencing, with the use of props, while addressing the theme that day. Deidre O’Brien has been practicing Iyengar-style yoga and meditation since 1991. She graduated from The Yoga Room’s 3 year 1,000-hour Advanced Studies Program in 2009. Deidre has assisted the Yoga for 55+ class at The Yoga Room taught by Herta Weinstein, M.D. since 2007. Dorinda Nyberg helps students focus on intention and anatomical alignment through compassionate and clear instruction, skillful sequencing, and perceptive hands-on adjustments. Herta Weinstein, MD, began practicing Iyengar yoga in the late 1970s, and in 1988 enrolled in the first Advanced Studies Program, which she has completed. Herta has been teaching yoga to seniors since 1995 at The Yoga Room, at community centers, and in private sessions.

After originally studying Yoga in the mid-1990s at the California Yoga Center in Palo Alto, Hillary returned to a regular yoga practice in 2009 to ease back pain associated with her work as a Technical Writer/Editor in science-based corporate America. Her style is influenced by the Yoga teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar and is based on building body awareness, ease, strength, flexibility, and balance. A graduate of the 500-hour Advanced Studies Teacher Training Program at The Yoga Room, in Berkeley, Hillary has RYT-500 certification with Yoga Alliance. Her continuing interests in yoga and science include study in human anatomy, plant medicines, meditation, ceremonial singing, and restorative yoga. Hillary continues her studies primarily as a student of Ada Lusardi (The Yoga Room, Berkeley CA) and Richard Rosen (Piedmont Yoga Community, Oakland, CA).

sx 8 6y has been teaching yoga in the SF Bay Area, in a number of therapeutic or clinical settings, since the end of the 1990s. In 2003, he graduated from the The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program. Since then, he has worked within and outside of the Iyengar community, primarily with Mary Lou Weprin and Michael Lucy; but also holding extensive retreats with Tias Little, Sarah Powers, and Dharmanidhi Saraswati; and further study within Zen, Vajrayana, and Vipassana meditation traditions. Most recently, Jim’s work has focused on Trauma recovery—both in a San Francisco mental health clinic (Dept of Public Health); working with Vets and PTSD; and observing Japanese yoga teachers work with the trauma sufferers immediately following the Fukushima tsunami/nuclear accident.

Olympia Ortega-Gregory, MA Health Education, RYT 500, graduated from the Advanced Studies Program in 2001, and since then she has taught students of varying abilities and experience emphasizing correct alignment for safe and accessible practice. Sandra Razieli originally came to yoga in 1997 after many years of frustration trying to find a way to ease pain associated with her scoliosis. She quickly discovered that the precision of an Iyengar-based asana practice not only helped her feel better in her body, but was great training for her mind and inspirational for her spirit. Sandra’s has been a Certified Yoga Instructor since 2001. She is also certified by Elise Miller as a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer, holds a teacher certification in Yoga and Jewish Spirituality from the Institute of Yoga and Jewish Spirituality and has studied with the Iyengars in Pune. While her teaching manner tends towards the playful, she is very serious about teaching careful alignment for long-term safety and wellness.

Sandy Zirulnik’s yoga classes explore structure, movement, strength, and balance through the practice of asanas, breathing awareness, and the study of anatomy. They are enjoyable and appropriate for students of all ages and interests. No experience or special level of flexibility is required. Sandy began studying Yoga in 1998 and graduated from The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program with a 500-hour certification. His teachers include Ada Lusardi, Donald Moyer, the faculty of The Yoga Room, Jonothon Gross, Sandra Razieli, and Laura Camp. Shari Ser, PT, RYT 500, E-RYT 500, has over 25 years of orthopedic experience and expertise teaching yoga for a wide range of medical conditions. Tasha Hansen has been teaching yoga for more than ten years. She is a graduate of the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Program in Boston; has studied at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India; and was certified by Sivananda in Quebec. Her classes combine attention to detailed alignment in individual poses along with occasional unbroken sequences of poses inspired by Gay White and a love of dance. Thara Srinivasan, PhD, is a graduate of The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program and has been teaching classes and workshops since 2011. Yoga has been a strong tradition in her family for generations. She learned pranayama (yoga breathwork) and meditation from her grandfather, a lifelong yogi, and viniyoga (a style of yoga movement with the breath) from her father, a student of T.K.V. Desikachar. By incorporating these elements into her teaching, Thara offers classes to revitalize the body and mind, bringing poses to life for students of all levels.
