with Phid Simons
Saturday, June 1st | 2-5pm
This workshop begins with learning how to pronounce letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, including how to interpret the diacritical marks used when writing Sanskrit with the letters of the English language. From the letters we move on to learning how to pronounce typical words used in the names of yoga-āsanas. After reviewing a few rules governing how words are combined to form āsana names, we will practice pronouncing the names of common yoga-āsanas. As we go along, we will discuss why it is important to pronounce the names correctly, identify common mistakes, and learn how to correct them. No previous experience is necessary and handouts will be provided.
Phid Simons has studied Sanskrit, Vedanta, and Vedic chanting with traditional teachers in India and the U.S. for over 25 years. She has practiced yoga for over 35 years and teaches Sanskrit, chanting, and Vedanta in the Bay Area.
