Muscle imbalances around the upper back, neck and shoulders can cause and contribute to pain and injuries in those areas. On the other hand, a well-structured Yoga practice can help correct imbalances, prevent problems, and bring relief to students who come to class seeking help with previous injuries.
In this class, we’ll study important muscle groups in the neck and shoulders, including the trapezius, pectorals, serratus anterior, and the rotator cuff. We’ll look at common imbalances (strong vs. weak and tight vs. flexible) in these muscles, and how they contribute to mis-alignments and movement patterns that set the stage for problems. The we’ll practice Yoga poses and sequences that correct imbalances, improve alignment, and relieve pain.
This will be an active class, and therefore is not recommended for people with severe problems or significantly limited mobility. One year of yoga experience is suggested.
