Scoliosis and other back issues are considered musculoskeletal conditions, but these conditions impact and are impacted by our organs. Deborah will offer techniques in the asanas to address these imbalances. She will also propose techniques to use the organs themselves to offer the spine more support. Understanding the specifics of your structure caused by back issue related asymmetries, one can learn to sense organic imbalances which have formed deeper within and how they impact one’s health. Open to all levels of experience and to teachers who work with scoliosis. Three months of yoga experience is strongly suggested.

It is recommended that you attend Saturday’s workshop to understand the work on Sunday.

Saturday begins locating the organs anatomically and experientially. Students will start with the digestive system and diaphragm as organizing principles, and through imagery, description, touch and movement will prepare to sense and locate the organs in their own bodies.  There will be a short presentation of the anatomy of scoliosis and the four archetypal patterns.  After confirming their personal patterns, students will then practice asana in relationship to those curve patterns beginning with the width of the diaphragm and rib cages to expand thoracic, lumbar and thoraco-lumbar concavities and find the elongation and extension of the digestive tract to create more length in the spine.

Sunday there will be further presentation of relevant organ anatomy.  Asana practice will focus on liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and reproductive organs. Students will learn how scoliosis impacts the organs or how organs can support or soften—resisting the pull of the inherent rotation and collapse of this condition.  If there is time, individual organic issues that may have been initiated or influenced by rotation and compression of the organs in relationship to some of the students’ asymmetries will be observed and addressed. At the end of the workshop, students will sense the heart and lungs with some restorative asana and pranayama practice specific to scoliotic patterns.

Deborah Wolk, C-IAYT, has been teaching and working with students with back issues, scoliosis, and other injuries for over 17 years. Her yoga practice working with her own scoliosis informs the work she does to help others.

Deborah met Bobbie Fultz in 2000—her first Yoga & Scoliosis teacher. She later met Elise Browning Miller and was certified as a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer through Elise’s training program in 2005. Her primary teacher is Genny Kapuler whose class she assisted for 10 years, and she has also studied extensively with Kevin Gardiner in NYC (now in Budapest) and Donald Moyer in Berkeley, among others. In 2007, Deborah travelled to India to study with the Iyengar family and spent most afternoons observing the medical classes there. Also in 2007, she co-founded Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis and co-directed it for 8 years. In January 2015, Deborah founded Samamkaya Yoga Back Care & Scoliosis Collective. Samamkaya is a democratically run workers cooperative and is devoted exclusively to scoliosis, back care, teacher education in therapeutics, and adaptive yoga for students with disabilities and nervous system disorders.

Deborah’s teachings are based in the principles of Iyengar style yoga and Body Mind Centering (BMC) techniques. She is warm and funny and her teachings are subtle yet explained at a level everyone can understand. Deborah teaches workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings on Back Care & Scoliosis in New York City, across the US, and around the world, and has a thriving private practice.
